Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. Dhaka is a megacity and one of the major cities of South Asia. Located on the east banks of the Buriganga River in the Ganges delta, Dhaka has an estimated population of more than 12 million people, making it the largest city in Bangladesh. It is known as the City of Mosques. Dhaka has been continuously inhabited for more than a millennium. The Old City of Dhaka was founded in the 17th century as the Mughal capital of Bengal. It was known as Jahangir Nagar (City of Jahangir) and was the center of the worldwide muslin trade.
Dhaka is the seat of government, parliament and judiciary in Bangladesh; as well as the international development organization BRAC and the Nobel Peace Prize-winning development institution Grameen Bank.
